There are millions of gardening books in print, whether you're looking for a technical style manual or a leaf-through-with-a-cuppa book full of inspirational photographs. Here are a few you might want to consider:
'Grow Your Own Veg' by Carol Klein
Published by Mitchell Beazley
It's a good, all-round volume with easy to understand text and the basics you need to know. I picked up my copy in WH Smith for less than half price, and it's been reprinted several times. So there's a good chance you'll find it second hand and I bet it's in your local library.
'Gardening Mad' by Monty Don
A Bloomsbury book
I love Monty Don's writing, and the photographs by Fleur Olby are sensational. A lovely book for dipping into, and covering everything from allotments to aconites, medlars and quinces to the National Trust. It's a book for the armchair gardener, great for reading during winter months when it's too cold and wet to venture out.
'You Grow Girl' by Gayla Trail
From the creator of YouGrowGirl.com
Published by Simon & Schuster
Geared toward an American audience, nevertheless the book's great fun, assuming as it does that you're creative, largely broke, green minded and the owner of a sunny windowsill or tiny back yard rather than several rolling acres. There are recipes for beauty preparations like Peppermint Foot Scrub as well as how to make compost or a wooden planter.
'Derek Jarman's Garden' by Derek Jarman, with photographs by Howard Sooley
Published by Thames & Hudson
A beautiful, lyrical book, part gardening, part poetry. There are plenty of photographs of Jarman's celebrated garden at Dungeness, as well as some of him visiting Monet's garden at Giverny. A poignant boo
