It was a rainy day today - hey Summer! Where are you? - so I spent the afternoon sewing. (as today's a non-work day). After previously spending untold hours concentrating on the paper piecing method and sewing precise hexagons I'm enjoying making these freehand designs. Loosely based on the Union Jack the blocks are made individually then joined by bias binding and strips of contrasting fabric. Wonky seams and raw edges are everywhere. I think they add vitality to the quilt. Perfection can be pleasing, but sometimes perfect quilts are utterly lifeless. Technically great but oh-so-dull. I hope this lap quilt will be around for years, and hopefully I'll eventually pass it on to someone who'll appreciate its crookedness and clashing colours.
On another matter - have started Hilary Mantel's 'Bring up the bodies'. Loved 'Wolf Hall' and the second in the trilogy is already gripping. I'm enjoying the BBC's Tudor season of films and documentaries. There's no getting away with our fascination for that period - the mix of love, lust, religion, wealth, poverty, royalty and bloodshed. What's not to like?!
